Open Source Software for Lawyers, Part 2: Open Source Applications You Can Use in Your Firm

In the First article of this series, I wrote about what Open Source Software (OSS) and why it can be superior to proprietary software. OSS offers more security and reliability. This this part, I will introduce you to some OSS applications that you can put to use in your firm today. All the applications discussed have a few things in common: 1) They are all free as in free speech and free as in free beer, 2) they all have a good reputation; 3) They all work on Linux, Windows, and Mac.

Alfresco--open source document management

It goes without saying that Document Management is an important aspect of law firm technology.  Attorneys need an efficient way to share documents and collaborate on projects.  There are some very robust proprietary document management programs, such as Worldox.  There are plenty of free and open source choices as well.  In this article, I take a look at Alfresco.

Open Source Software for Lawyers, Part 1: What is Open Source Software?

Everyone who reads this will have at least two-things in common:  we all buy software and we all share recipes. Can you image if we had to obtain recipes the same way we obtain software?  Forget about cost for the moment (although it is important).  Imagine if you at a terrific home-cooked meal at your neighbor's house.  "What a great dish! I must have the recipe!" you say.  The chef gladly gives it to you--in a shrink-wrapped box.
